QUESTION

can you take l-theanine every day?

human trials have run daily l-theanine for four weeks and longer without notable safety findings, and it occurs naturally in green tea that people drink daily. it is generally considered well tolerated. that said, it is not studied in pregnancy, in children, or alongside every medication, so those cases need a doctor.

what the longer trials did

the 2019 randomized controlled trial in healthy adults ran four weeks of daily l-theanine administration and measured stress-related symptoms and cognitive function. the 2020 systematic review covers the wider set of studies, which include repeated and single-dose designs.

williams and colleagues (2020) and payne and colleagues (2025) both survey the wider literature without flagging safety signals at the doses studied, and lardner (2014) reaches the same conclusion reviewing the neurobiology.

l-theanine is also a natural constituent of green tea, which a very large number of people drink every day across a lifetime. that is not clinical evidence, but it is context worth having.

the honest limits

generally well tolerated is not the same as studied in everyone. there is not enough research on l-theanine or gaba in pregnancy or breastfeeding, which is why nula does not recommend it in those situations.

it is made for adults. if you take prescription medication — particularly for blood pressure, mood or anxiety — check with your doctor or pharmacist before adding anything, because they know your situation and a webpage does not.

if you are taking it as a gum specifically

there is a second daily limit that has nothing to do with l-theanine: the base. nula's suggested use is a maximum of ten pieces a day. the sweeteners used in sugar-free gum, xylitol among them, can upset the stomach in quantity.

xylitol is also toxic to dogs even in small amounts, so a pack left in a bag on the floor is a real hazard. keep it away from pets.

common follow-ups

there is no strong published evidence of tolerance developing at the doses used in trials. that is a gap in the research as much as a finding, so it is worth being honest about it.

ten pieces a day, per the product's own suggested use. the practical limit is usually the gum base rather than the actives.

no. nula is made for adults. check with a pediatrician before giving it to anyone under 18, and note the xylitol content.
