QUESTION
how much l-theanine should i take?
most human trials use somewhere between 100mg and 400mg, with around 200mg being the common single dose. nula provides 100mg per serving and allows a second piece, which puts two pieces in the middle of the studied range. more is not automatically better, and nothing here replaces asking a pharmacist.
the doses the studies used
kimura and colleagues (2007) worked at the 200mg level for an acute stress task. hidese and colleagues (2019) ran four weeks of daily dosing in healthy adults. williams and colleagues (2020) and payne and colleagues (2025) both survey a range across the literature rather than converging on one number.
the fair summary is a band, not a figure: roughly 100mg to 400mg per dose in most human work, clustering around 200mg.
what that means for a chewable
nula is 100mg per serving. that is a real dose at the lower end of the band, and the suggested use allows a second piece, which lands two pieces around the commonly studied 200mg.
we would rather say that plainly than imply 100mg is the studied dose. if you want 200mg in a single unit at the lowest price, a capsule does that better — see the capsules comparison.
more is not automatically better
l-theanine is generally well tolerated, but the trials did not find that effect scales indefinitely with dose, and there is no benefit established for pushing far past the studied range.
nula's own limit is ten pieces a day, and in practice the binding constraint is the gum base rather than the actives — sugar alcohols in quantity can upset your stomach.
common follow-ups
the suggested use is one to two as needed. two puts you nearer the dose most trials used.
there is no established benefit to doing so, and no good safety data far above the studied range. stay inside the label and ask a pharmacist if you are unsure.
a cup of green tea contains l-theanine but far below trial doses, and it brings caffeine with it.
