QUESTION
what can i take for stress that isn't a pill?
the non-pill formats are gum, gummies, drinks and drops. they differ in whether the dose is printed, how much sugar they carry, and whether you chew or swallow. a chewed format adds the act of chewing, which lowered cortisol in one stress trial. nula calm gum is caffeine-free and sugar-free, with 100mg l-theanine and 50mg gaba per serving.
| nula calm gum | gummies, drinks and capsules | |
|---|---|---|
| how you take it | chewed for at least 3 minutes, then discarded | swallowed: a gummy is chewed briefly, a drink or capsule goes straight down |
| where it goes first | the mouth, for as long as you chew | the stomach and gut, before anything reaches the bloodstream |
| sugar | none — xylitol, erythritol, monk fruit and stevia | gummies and drinks usually carry sugar or a sugar alcohol; capsules do not |
| dose disclosure | l-theanine 100mg and gaba 50mg printed per serving | varies; blends without per-ingredient milligrams are common in gummies and drinks |
| caffeine | none | none in most gummies and capsules; some drinks add it — read the can |
| where you can use it | anywhere you can chew gum — a desk, a corridor, a waiting room | a drink needs a can; a capsule needs water; a gummy is easy but looks like a sweet |
the four formats, and the pages that go deeper on each
capsules are the baseline. a swallowed pill has to clear the stomach and gut before anything is absorbed, which is why most labels quote 30 to 60 minutes. the capsule comparison page covers that route in detail.
gummies are the popular alternative. they are chewed for a few seconds and then swallowed, so they take the same route as a capsule, usually with sugar added to make them pleasant. the stress-gummies comparison covers what is typically in them.
drinks and drops are the third group. an l-theanine drink puts the ingredient in a can, often alongside caffeine; a drop goes under the tongue. the drinks comparison covers where those fit.
gum is the fourth. it is the only one of the four that stays in your mouth for minutes and the only one that involves sustained chewing. nula is that format: peppermint gum with 100mg l-theanine and 50mg gaba per serving, no sugar, no caffeine.
what chewing adds
scholey and colleagues (2009) found that chewing ordinary gum during a laboratory stress task lowered salivary cortisol and improved mood against a no-gum control. sketchley-kaye and colleagues (2011) looked at the social-stress case specifically — the presentation, the interview — and found chewing shifted state measures there too.
the literature is not unanimous, and a page that cites only the supportive trial is doing the thing this site criticises. but no swallowed format can claim the chewing effect at all, because there is no chewing. that is the structural difference, before any ingredient is compared.
how to choose
ask whether the milligrams are printed. kimura and colleagues (2007) measured l-theanine's effect on stress responses at a stated dose, and williams and colleagues (2020) reviewed the trials; a product that will not tell you its dose cannot be lined up against any of that.
ask about sugar and caffeine. neither belongs in a calm product, and neither is always disclosed.
ask where you will actually be when you want it. a format you cannot use in a meeting is a format you will not use in a meeting. nula is not a medicine and not a sleep aid; it is a dietary supplement for occasional stress you can chew at a desk.
common follow-ups
it is a different route. a capsule is absorbed through the gut; a gum stays in the mouth while you chew and adds the chewing effect. which one suits you depends on where you are and how soon you want to have taken something.
not necessarily, but many carry sugar and some hide their doses in a blend. read for a per-ingredient milligram figure before judging one.
no to both. it is caffeine-free and sweetened with xylitol, erythritol, sorbitol, monk fruit and stevia.
