does gaba in chewing gum actually do anything?
nobody has tested gaba in a chewing gum specifically. the oral gaba evidence is contested, and the gum format has not settled it. what a gum adds is the chewing itself, which lowered cortisol against a control in one stress trial. nula labels 50mg gaba per serving next to 100mg l-theanine, so nothing rests on the disputed part.
start with what is known about oral gaba at all
the argument about oral gaba is whether it crosses the blood-brain barrier in useful amounts. leonte and colleagues (2018) ran a placebo-controlled trial and wrote in their own abstract that the question is controversial — then reported an effect on one attention measure anyway. deshpande and colleagues (2025) compared gaba with l-theanine in the same protocol. guimarães and colleagues (2024) reported heart-rate variability and sleep-efficiency changes, in sedentary overweight men doing exercise rather than in people like you.
so: real trials, mixed results, and a mechanism nobody has closed. lardner (2014) reviews l-theanine, which does cross the barrier — that is the contrast case, and it is why nula pairs the two rather than betting on gaba alone. the general version of this question has its own page; this one is about the gum.
what changes when it is a gum
two things, and only one of them is about gaba. first, a gum keeps its contents in your mouth for the minutes you chew it rather than sending everything to the stomach at once. that is a different route, and it is the reason nula's suggested use says at least three minutes. it is not evidence that gaba works better this way — no published trial has put gaba in a gum and measured it, and we would rather say that than imply otherwise.
second, chewing does something on its own. scholey and colleagues (2009) found that chewing ordinary gum during a laboratory stress task lowered salivary cortisol and improved mood against a no-gum control. johnson and colleagues (2011) re-examined the effect and found the picture less tidy. that is the honest state of the chewing literature: a real signal, not a uniform one.
put together, a gaba gum gives you the chewing effect plus an ingredient with contested support. that is a fair description of nula's gaba line, and it is why the l-theanine line matters more.
how to read a gaba gum label
look for a milligram figure. some gums name gaba and print no amount, which makes the claim impossible to check. nula prints 50mg per serving, and a serving is one to two pieces.
look at what it is paired with. a gum that is gaba and nothing else rests entirely on the disputed part. nula puts 100mg l-theanine — the better-evidenced ingredient, at the larger dose — in the same piece.
look for caffeine and sugar. neither belongs in a calm gum, and neither is always disclosed. nula is caffeine-free and sugar-free, and says so on the label.
common follow-ups
some of what is in a gum is swallowed and some is in contact with the lining of your mouth while you chew. whether gaba taken either way reaches the brain in useful amounts is the unresolved question in the research, and a gum does not resolve it.
a gum adds the act of chewing, which has its own measured effect on stress markers in some trials. that is the difference. the gaba evidence itself is the same either way.
