why the two are paired
l-theanine and gaba are the two amino acids people reach for when they want calm without sedation, and they are not equally supported. l-theanine crosses the blood-brain barrier — lardner (2014) reviews the mechanism — and kimura and colleagues (2007) measured its effect on stress responses. oral gaba has trials but an open question about whether it reaches the brain in useful amounts.
deshpande and colleagues (2025) put the two head to head in the same randomised protocol, which is the closest the literature comes to a direct comparison. nula's design follows from that: the better-evidenced ingredient at the larger dose, 100mg, with 50mg gaba alongside it, so the product does not depend on the disputed part.
gum, mint or soft chew
the same pairing exists in three formats, and the format changes what actually happens. a compressed mint sits on the tongue and dissolves; you do not chew it. a soft chew is chewed briefly and swallowed, so it takes the same route as a gummy. a gum is chewed for minutes and then thrown away — nothing is swallowed on purpose.
that matters because chewing has its own measured effect. scholey and colleagues (2009) found that chewing gum during a laboratory stress task lowered salivary cortisol and improved mood against a no-gum control; smith (2010) found the effect differed between stressed and non-stressed volunteers. a mint cannot claim that effect and a soft chew barely can. only a gum is chewed long enough for it to apply.
reading the labels across formats
check the dose basis first. nula prints per serving, and a serving is one to two pieces. many mints print per piece. a per-piece number next to a per-serving number is not a comparison until you know how many pieces each label assumes.
check sugar and caffeine. soft chews are often sweetened with sugar. brands that sell a calm mint frequently sell a caffeinated gum under the same name, and the packaging looks alike. nula is sugar-free and caffeine-free, and says so.
