COMPARISON
calm gum vs a caffeine and l-theanine stack — which is which?
a caffeine and l-theanine stack is an energy product. the theanine is there to smooth the caffeine, not to calm you down. a calm gum uses l-theanine without caffeine, so nothing is being smoothed. the marketing language overlaps almost completely, and the products do opposite jobs.
| nula calm gum | Caffeine + L-theanine stacks (category) | |
|---|---|---|
| caffeine | none | typically 40-100mg per serving |
| what the theanine is for | the primary active | smoothing the caffeine |
| job | settle down | wake up, without jitter |
| usable late in the day | yes | depends on your caffeine sensitivity |
the same ingredient, two opposite products
l-theanine appears in two completely different kinds of product. in an energy stack it is the counterweight — caffeine provides the lift, theanine takes the edge off the jitter. nawarathna and colleagues (2025) studied a high-dose theanine-caffeine combination for selective attention under acute stress, which is the case those products are built for.
in a calm product there is no caffeine to counterweight. the theanine is the whole point.
read the caffeine number, not the words
this is where people get caught. the packaging on both says things like calm, focus and clarity. the only reliable way to tell them apart is the caffeine figure on the label.
neuro's energy & focus gum, for instance, lists caffeine 40mg with l-theanine 60mg on its own page as of august 17 2026. that is a fine product. it is not a calm product, and at 4pm the difference matters.
which one you want
if you are tired and need to work, a stack is the right category. if you are wired and need to settle, adding a stimulant is the wrong direction however the box is worded.
nula has no caffeine at all.
common follow-ups
not at all — it is a well-studied pairing and a sensible one if energy is what you want. it is just not a calm product.
none. it is caffeine-free.
