most people describe it as the edge coming off rather than as a noticeable high or a sedative pull. researchers call the target state alert relaxation: steadier, still sharp. plenty of people feel very little on a first try, and that is a normal outcome rather than a faulty product.
the honest description
the common report is subtraction, not addition. the background hum gets quieter. the thing you were tense about is still there and you are still thinking about it — it just has less grip.
if you are expecting the clear on-off of a stimulant or a sedative, that expectation will not be met, and people who are expecting it often conclude nothing happened.
what the research language means

so the target is not sedation. if a calm product makes you foggy, it is doing something other than what l-theanine is studied for.
if you feel nothing
that happens, and it is worth saying rather than hiding. individual response varies; the dose matters, and 100mg is at the lower end of the studied band, which is why the label allows a second piece.
it is also easier to notice when you are actually stressed. taking it on a calm afternoon and waiting to feel something is not a fair test — smith (2010) found the chewing-gum effects differed by whether volunteers were stressed to begin with, and the same logic applies here.

there is no evidence of dependence with l-theanine at the doses studied, and it is not a controlled substance.
