what is the best supplement for stress that works fast?

for speed, look for l-theanine in a format you chew rather than swallow. l-theanine reduced measured stress responses during acute tasks in controlled trials, and a chewed format skips the stomach and gut that make most supplements quote 30 to 60 minutes. nula is built on exactly that combination.

speed is a delivery question before it is an ingredient question

almost every stress supplement on the shelf is swallowed. that means the same route every time: esophagus, stomach, small intestine, gut wall, bloodstream. that route is why so many labels say 30 to 60 minutes, and it is why the ingredient you picked matters less than you would think when the thing you needed was twenty minutes ago.

so the first filter is not which active. it is whether the product is designed to be absorbed anywhere other than your gut.

the ingredient with the best acute evidence is l-theanine

l-theanine is the amino acid in green tea, and it is the only common calm ingredient with a real body of ACUTE human evidence — trials that dose people and then measure them during a stressful task, rather than after six weeks.

kimura and colleagues (2007) gave l-theanine before an arithmetic stress task and recorded lower psychological and physiological stress responses than placebo. white and colleagues (2016) ran a double-blind crossover trial pairing self-reported stress with magnetoencephalography and found effects on both. hidese and colleagues (2019) took it further out, running four weeks of daily dosing in healthy adults and measuring stress-related symptoms alongside cognitive function.

williams and colleagues (2020) pulled the literature together in a systematic review and found the direction of effect on stress and calm reasonably consistent at the doses studied. payne and colleagues (2025) reviewed it again more recently, across cognition, sleep and mood.

on mechanism, lardner (2014) reviewed what theanine appears to be doing neurologically — it crosses the blood-brain barrier, which is precisely the thing oral gaba is disputed on.

the format evidence, including the parts that disagree

the act of chewing has been measured against stress markers on its own, with no active ingredient involved. scholey and colleagues (2009) found chewing gum during an acute laboratory stress task lowered salivary cortisol and improved self-reported mood against a no-gum control. sketchley-kaye and colleagues (2011) looked specifically at social stress — the presentation-and-interview case — and reported changes in state anxiety and alertness.

here is the part most brands leave out. johnson and colleagues (2011) published a re-examination of the multi-task findings, and smith (2010) found the effect differed depending on whether volunteers were already stressed. the chewing-gum literature is real but it is mixed, and anyone citing only scholey is showing you one study out of several.

the honest version: chewing plausibly contributes something, the size of that something is unsettled, and it is a reason to prefer a chewable rather than a reason to buy one.

the shortlist, honestly ranked

chewables with l-theanine — the shortest route into the bloodstream, plus whatever the chewing itself contributes. this is where nula sits.

l-theanine capsules — same active, more of it per unit, usually much cheaper per milligram, but on the gut's timetable. if speed is not your constraint, this is the efficient choice and we say so on the comparison page.

magnesium — boyle and colleagues (2017) reviewed magnesium for subjective anxiety and stress and found the existing trials suggestive but of generally poor quality, calling for better-controlled work. botturi and colleagues (2020) reached similar conclusions. magnesium is a baseline you build over weeks and it matters most if your intake is low. it is not a fast option whatever the packaging says.

b vitamins, vitamin c, zinc — mccabe and colleagues (2017) reviewed these together for stress in women. again: nutrition-status territory, not an in-the-moment tool.

ashwagandha — studied over six to twelve weeks of daily use, so not fast either, and it carries a caution the others do not. NIH LiverTox rates it a likely cause of clinically apparent liver injury and advises against use in people with cirrhosis or advanced liver disease.

gaba on its own — see the honest answer below. the mechanism is disputed and we do not lean on it.

where gaba actually sits

nula contains gaba, so it would be convenient to tell you it is proven. it is not. whether oral gaba crosses the blood-brain barrier in useful amounts is unresolved, and leonte and colleagues (2018) say so in the abstract of their own placebo-controlled study while still reporting an effect on one attention measure.

there is some positive human work — guimarães and colleagues (2024) reported changes in heart-rate variability and sleep efficiency with gaba supplementation, though in sedentary overweight men undergoing exercise, which is not most readers. deshpande and colleagues (2025) measured gaba against l-theanine in the same randomised protocol, which is a useful comparison to have.

that is why nula weights l-theanine higher: 100mg of the better-evidenced ingredient against 50mg of the contested one.

what nula is, and who it is not for

l-theanine 100mg and gaba 50mg per serving, in a natural chicle chewing gum. caffeine-free, sugar-free, aspartame-free, vegan. suggested use is one to two pieces, chewed for at least three minutes, and no more than ten pieces a day.

worth knowing before you buy: 100mg per serving is at the LOWER end of what the trials above used — many run around 200mg. the suggested use allows a second piece. if you want the studied dose in one unit at the lowest cost, capsules do that better and we are not going to pretend otherwise.

it is made for adults. not for children, and not for use during pregnancy or breastfeeding — there is not enough research on l-theanine and gaba in those situations. if you take prescription medication, particularly for blood pressure or mood, check with your doctor or pharmacist first. it contains xylitol, which is toxic to dogs even in small amounts.

common follow-ups

many people notice something within minutes of chewing. that is a design goal and a common experience, not a clinical guarantee — individual responses vary, and no supplement works the same way for everyone.

nula is formulated for calm without sedation. l-theanine in particular is studied for what researchers describe as alert relaxation rather than sedation.

if your goal is calm, yes. several popular nootropic chewables are built around caffeine with l-theanine to smooth it out, which is a different job entirely. nula has no caffeine.
