COMPARISON
calm gum vs magnesium for stress — which one works?
magnesium and a calm gum run on different timescales. magnesium is a mineral you build up over weeks, and it matters most if you are low on it. l-theanine and gaba in a chewable are aimed at the next twenty minutes. neither replaces the other, so pick by whether you want a baseline or a moment.

magnesium is a baseline, not a rescue
magnesium is an essential mineral involved in hundreds of processes in the body, including nerve and muscle function. if your intake is low, correcting that is worth doing, and the effect builds over weeks of consistent intake rather than arriving in an afternoon.
the evidence is weaker than the shelf space implies. boyle and colleagues (2017) reviewed magnesium for subjective anxiety and stress and found the existing trials suggestive but of generally poor quality, calling for better-controlled work. botturi and colleagues (2020) reached a similar verdict reviewing magnesium more broadly. mccabe and colleagues (2017) looked at magnesium alongside b vitamins, vitamin c and zinc for stress in women and found the same pattern — plausible, under-evidenced.
that also means magnesium is doing very little for you in the ten minutes before a difficult conversation. it was never designed to.
amino acids are aimed at the moment
l-theanine is the amino acid in green tea. in a 2007 controlled trial it reduced measured stress responses during an acute task, and a 2020 systematic review of the wider literature found consistent effects on stress and self-reported calm at the doses studied.
hidese and colleagues (2019) took it further, running four weeks of daily dosing in healthy adults while measuring both stress-related symptoms and cognitive function.
gaba is the other active. the evidence for oral gaba is thinner and genuinely contested — see our page on whether a gaba supplement works, which does not oversell it.
different forms of magnesium behave differently
magnesium glycinate, citrate, oxide and l-threonate are not interchangeable, and they differ in how well the body absorbs them and how they sit in the stomach. if you are comparing a magnesium product to anything, check which form it uses first.
many magnesium products marketed for calm are drink mixes taken in the evening. that is a different ritual from something you carry with you.
common follow-ups
many people do, and plenty of products combine them. if you take prescription medication or have a kidney condition, ask your doctor or pharmacist first — magnesium in particular interacts with several drug classes.
a chewable amino acid is designed for the near term; magnesium is not. if speed is the whole point, magnesium is the wrong tool.
